Programmed motion generation via the advanced shape memory technology

The shape memory effect (SME) is meant for the recovery of a material back to its original shape, but only at the presence of a right stimulus, such as heat, light and chemical (e.g., water). The advanced shape memory technology aims to achieve the required motion generation/actuation of a particular application based on the SME of an existing shape memory material (SMM) or a customized one.

In this talk, the basic concept of advanced shape memory technology is briefly introduced, together with the major mechanisms to enable the SME in materials. After that, a series of examples will be presented to reveal the feasibility of utilizing the advanced shape memory technology to realized programmed motion generation in a fully autonomous manner in some typical applications, such as active assembly/dis-assembly, 4D printing, and occlusion of blood vessel.
